Five held for posing as election squad, robbing Rs 1.07 crore in Chennai

The 'Flying Election Squad' stopped a vehicle in Saidapet carrting three employees of a construction company who had received Rs 1.07 crore from a financier in Vepery.

CHENNAI : A gang of five men were arrested on Sunday for posing as election officers and stealing Rs 1.07 crore in Saidapet on March 16. The accused were identified as Mugil (27) from Maduravoyal, Gajendran (31) from Poonamallee, Kodiarasan (30) from Sriperumbudur, Venugopal (27) from Iyyappanthangal and Siva (31) from Vyasarpadi. Police said, Gajendran and Kodiarasan, were the mastermind.

According to the police on March 15, three employees of a construction company received Rs 1.07 crore from a financier in Vepery and were on their way to Thandalam. When the car was near the Saidapet bus stop, it was stopped by another car with a sticker ‘Flying Election Squad’ on it. Police said, according to the complainant, who is the manager of the company, some men were in formals while the others were in police uniform.

“A group got out and introduced themselves as election squad. While the employees were taken into the car of the ‘flying squad’, one man drove the car of the employees which had the cash. When the gang reached Poonamallee, the gang dropped the employees and fled,” said a police officer.

Based on the complaint by one of the employees, a case was registered by the Saidapet police and hunt began. A police team nabbed the suspects from their hideout in the city and remanded them under judicial custody. The police team seized Rs 5.12 lakh cash, a bike, a four wheeler. The police said there are few more men connected with the cash and they will be soon nabbed.
