CHENNAI: Addressing a long-standing demand among residents of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenements in Perumbakkam, the board has decided to conduct special classes for students in the tenements appearing for their tenth and twelfth board exams. The classes would be for three subjects- Maths, Science and English.

While the board is now enumerating the number of students who would be appearing for their board exams, the classes would still be conducted even if there are ‘as little as 20 students,’ willing to come on board, officials said.

A recent study by IRCDUC had stated that students from these settlements travel as much as 50 kilometres (one way) to get to their schools that are often located in their former places of residence at the heart of the city. “I hope they consult with us for timings so that we can attend these classes after coming back from school,” said Santhosh Kumar, a student of class 12.
