Former President APJ Abdul Kalam on Monday exhorted students to perform their duties towards their parents and follow the teachings prescribed in their religious scriptures.

Inaugurating the St Thomas memorial prayer hall at the Shrine of Our Lady of Health in Little Mount in Saidapet, Kalam called upon the students at St Francis Xavier Middle School to maintain their individuality in order to achieve their goals.

“Also, dream big in life and strive to achieve them,” he said.  In keeping up with his usual practice, Kalam interacted with the students, quizzing them about the inventors of the telephone, electric bulb and so on. He also read out passages from the Bible and asked the students to repeat them. He also gave them his email ID and said they could post their queries to him. “I will get back to you in 24 hours,” he said.

Earlier, Kalam distributed assistance to weaker sections and also released a DVD on the life of St Thomas.  The former president also visited the cave in Little Mount in which St Thomas is believed to have lived for many years.

He also viewed the bleeding cross carved by the apostle himself and the footprints, believed to be that of the saint himself, at the foot of the hillock.

Father M Arulraj, Vicar General of Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore, Father M V Jacob, Rector and Parish Priest, Little Mount Shrine, and V Rhymend Uthariaraj, Professor and Director of Ramanujan Computing Centre, Anna University, were among those who participated.
