On a bright Sunday morning, Sundaragurusami, a resident of Mogappair, woke up to see the corporation workers engaged in catching stray dogs in his locality and piling them into a tricycle. Though there was nothing unusual about it, given the sterilization drives conducted by the corporation, what struck to him as strange was that corporation chaps don’t work on Sundays.

“They told me that they were hired by the Mogappair Garden Association to capture stray dogs,” Sundaragurusami said. He took pictures of the captured dogs and posted them on his Facebook page. The images triggered outrage and animal lovers tried to get to the bottom of the matter.

They found out that Selva Kumar, secretary of Mogappair Garden Association, had engaged Prabhu Das and his accomplices to get rid of the dog menace. In all, 22 dogs were captured. Officials of Blue Cross, an NGO, lodged a complaint with the Nolambur police, but the cops refused to file a First Information Report (FIR). Vijay Kumar, police inspector, said, “We have made an entry in the community service register (CSR) and are conducting an inquiry.”

So, what happened to the dogs? There are no clear answers. While the officials claim they were captured for sterilization, Blue Cross maintains that stray dogs in the locality had already been sterilized during a previous drive.
