A 92-year-old ex-serviceman, who claimed he was a freedom fighter and had taken part in the Second World War, has approached the city police seeking protection from a few persons who were allegedly trying to grab a land awarded to him by the government.

TV Ponnaiah, residing in Thiyagi Ponnaiah Nagar in Korattur, submitted a petition in the city police office on Monday, alleging that a few persons were intimidating him to grab the 3.60 acre land from him. “The government gave me the land in 1984 recognising my contribution as a freedom fighter. I was planning to build houses for poor ex-Army persons in the land. But a few persons have encroached the land and even manhandled me when I questioned them,” alleged Ponnaiah.

He claimed that he served for the British in the Second World War and spent nearly nine months in various parts of Europe between 1943 and 1945.

He said the other party initiated a court litigation to grab the land. Despite a court ruling in his favour, they were intimidating him.

“I have been struggling to get patta for the land for the last 25 years. But the officials are not taking any steps on my application. I want the police to give me protection and also the officials to issue the patta for the land to me,” he said.
