Two empty coaches of an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train derailed at Gummidipoondi railway station near here on Tuesday morning, causing massive cancellation of suburban trains on the Chennai-Gudur section.

Passengers commuting from Arambakkam, Kavarapettai and Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district and Tada and Sulurpet in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh faced untold miseries to reach Chennai due to the unexpected cancellation of EMU services, sources claimed.

The derailment happened when an EMU train, which was stabled on a non-platform lane, was moving towards the platform lane at 4.10 AM in Gummidipoondi.

According to a Southern Railway spokesperson, 16 EMU services were cancelled between Chennai and Gummipoondi between 4 AM and 10 AM, while three express trains from Hyderabad, Kakinada and Guwahati were delayed for 60 to 90 minutes, following the derailment.  Asked about reason for the derailment, the official said it was yet to be ascertained.
