The narrative could be a straight lift from a Tamil celluloid melodrama, directed and acted by Cheran. But when the romantic hero’s daughter accused him of playing villain in her life by even going to the extent of setting hired goons upon the man of her heart, the plot thickened.

Memories of poignant scenes from the 2004 blockbuster, Autograph, rushed to mind as 20-year-old Damini, doing her under-graduation in a city college, said that Chandru, her boyfriend of two years, was beaten up by Cheran’s henchmen at their house last month.

Before submitting a petition at the Police Commissioner’s office, along with Chandru’s sister Gowri, Damini said: “Chandru has gone into hiding for over a month. If anything happens to him, my father should be held responsible.”

A resident of Choolaimedu, Chandru regularly visited Cheran’s office to assist him in office work during the release of films. Damini met him at a function and fell in love.

“When my father came to know about our affair, he asked us to wait for two years and said he would arrange our wedding. But soon his behaviour changed,” Damini claimed, making one wonder if the director drew inspiration from his own character —  the Muslim father in his 2009 film, Pokkisham (treasure), who first promises to marry his daughter to the hero (played of course by Cheran) but then goes back on his word.

When contacted by police, Cheran had said he was opposed to the marriage as Chandru was ‘not a person of good character’.
