It is a confluence that has brought together faculty, students and industrialists under one roof for exchange of ideas.

The platform is Shaastra, the annual technical festival of the Indian Institute of Technology. And the theme: Breaking Boundaries.

Inaugurating the ‘Research Confluence’ on Friday, IIT-M director Bhaskar Ramamurthi described the four-day event as a turning point in the evolution of Shaastra.

“Students are coming out with new ideas, innovations and building gadgets,” he said. “It is also facilitating interaction between post-graduate and under-graduate students, which is not common even in advanced countries,” he added.

Besides, the event also facilitated the students’ early entry into research and in gaining greater exposure to research, he pointed out.

Stating that the ‘Lunar Rover Challenge’ was the high point of the festival, Ramamurthi said the festival gave students an opportunity to collaborate with Team Indus, India’s sole representative at the Google Lunar X Prize, in creating a robot that might make it to the moon.

A model of the lunar surface was being created inside the campus for that purpose, he added.

The director said the recommendations of the Kakodkar Committee had been introduced and an orientation programme was held for 500 research scholars admitted to the institution in January.

He released a research magazine ‘Immerse’, brou- ght out by Shaastra and The Fifth Estate, summarising research activities.
