Intensifying their drive against unauthorised constructions in the city, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) officials partially sealed a residential building on Damodarmurthy Road in Kilpauk for violating norms, on Thursday.

According to a CMDA release, the Chennai Corporation had permitted the owner of the building to construct a stilt floor plus two floors ordinary residential building in December, 2012.

However, the owner, in contravention of the sections 56 and 57 of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971, had constructed an additional floor. There were deviations in setbacks and floor space index as well, the CMDA release added.

Despite the owner being served a locking and sealing and demolition notice on August 16 this year, he failed to rectify the lapses, the release said. Meanwhile, the CMDA locked and sealed a part of a building on Old Mahabalipuram Road in Kottivakkam, on Tuesday. Officials said that the owner of plot number 30 had obtained permission from the Commissioner of St Thomas Mount Panchayat Union to construct ground floor with first floor with departmental store.

However, he constructed an additional floor  wholly for commercial use. A stop work notice was served to the owner on January 4 this year, but he failed to heed to the notice and went ahead with the construction.

Subsequently, lock and seal and demolition notices were issued on February 6 and September 6, 2013.

When the owner failed to comply with the norms, despite several reminders, the authorities locked and sealed the building on Tuesday, said the release.
