The police claimed to have busted a kidney-sales racket here with the arrest of six persons on Saturday. Among those held were two city-based women, who were about to sell their kidneys to female renal patients undergoing treatment in a hospital at Kilpauk. Three women intermediaries and the husband of one of the women kidney-sellers too were nabbed.

Police said three women intermediaries — Girija, Sophia and Devi — were running the racket by contacting families of patients and coercing gullible women to sell their kidneys to patients.

According to the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, only blood relatives and close friends can donate kidneys without monetary consideration. Police said the three women had forged documents to show that the recipients and the donors were close relatives. The forgery was identified during scrutiny by an authorisation committee, whose permission is mandatory for any hospital to transplant organs donated by a live person. The committee was verifying kidney transplant proposals for two renal patients — Jayamani, a resident of Erode, and Chandra, a resident of Kolathur — both undergoing treatment in MR Hospital in Kilpauk.

While interviewing the donors, the panel found that they gave conflicting replies. “They claimed they were close relatives and submitted documents to establish it. But when we asked searching questions, it was clear they did not know each other for long,” said Dr V Kanagasabai, dean of MMC and RGGGH and a member of the committee.
