Demonitisation: Woman in New Delhi sets herself ablaze, dies in hospital

ALIGARH: A 45-year-old daily wage labourer who had set herself ablaze here after allegedly failing to exchange old notes, succumbed to the burns at a hospital in New Delhi on Sunday.
 
Razia, a resident of Shahjamal locality in Delhi Gate area, had immolated herself on the evening of November 20 after her consistent efforts at exchanging six notes of Rs 500 at different branches of banks in the old city area for five days failed.
 
On the night of November 20 when Razia was rushed to the district hospital in a critical condition she told media persons that she took the extreme "out of total helplessness as her four children had not eaten anything for three days".
 
Protests ensued after the news of the death broke, with locals coming out in large numbers. However, the mob subsided with the city chief of Samajwadi Party Baba Farid assuring them that the matter would be taken up with the State government.
 
Her funeral was attended by senior district officials and police personnel.
