A 21-year old woman died after being stabbed 22 times by a jilted lover on Tuesday morning in full public view here, police said.

NEW DELHI: For three whole minutes, a 21-year-old teacher was stabbed 30 times in full public view by a man who claimed to be her jilted lover in Burari area here on Tuesday morning. A bystander tentatively moved forward to stop the man when the first blow was dealt, but immediately backed off apparently shocked by the frenzied assaulter, who was later arrested.

The CCTV footage of 34-year-old Surender Singh impaling Karuna Kumar has gone viral, prompting a fresh debate on women’s safety in the national capital. People who witnessed the gruesome incident did not dare intervene.

The victim, Karuna, who sustained deep wounds on her chest and face, was rushed to a hospital after the alleged stalker had left the scene, but was declared brought dead.

Karuna Kumar, 21, worked as a teacher at Novel Riches School along with her cousin Neha. Both of them were on their way to the school when Karuna was suddenly attacked by Surender with a scissor near Labour Chowk in Burari around 9 am, police said.

The incident drew outrage as CCTV footage of the frenzied stabbing by Surender was aired by media, prompting fresh debate on women safety in the national capital.

As Surender caught Karuna off guard and plunged the single blade of scissors in her body, a man rushed to stop him but soon backed off fearing attack on himself. Within three minutes, Surender had stabbed Karuna 30 times and kicked her thrice, the eyewitness said.

“The accused not only stabbed and kicked but also smothered her. It seems that he want to confirmed she is dead. He then fearlessly walk around her body and called someone from his mobile phone,” said a local resident.

Neha was also threatened by Surender and had to back off but she kept shouting for help. The accused is the son of a retired Delhi Police sub-inspector and is going through divorce proceedings and has two kids. The couple got separated as he was in habit of beating his wife, police said.

The CCTV footage showed that the accused came on a bike and hurriedly got down before stabbing the girl who staggered and fell down as she tried to save herself.

The brutal attack did not stop there and he kept on stabbing the helpless girl like a maniac even as some petrified passersby watched unable to take any action. He stabbed on her chest and face on multiple times.

A call at Police control room was made by the locals and the victim was rushed to the hospital by police. “Karuna was rushed to Sushrut Trauma Centre in Civil Lines where she was declared brought dead by the doctors. Surender was beaten up by the locals, who caught him and handed him over to the police,” said a senior police official.

He was taken to Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital with head injuries but later shifted to Lok Nayak Hospital.

Last year in December, Surender and Karuna got introduced to each other at the training centre owned by Surender where Karuna used to learn computer. He fell in love with her and expressed his feeling but she refused his proposal and stopped going computer classes.

“After Karuna refused his proposal, he started following her. She complained to his father about Surender advances. Karuna’s parents filed police complaint against Surender. After which Surender and his parents apologized for his behavior and requested to withdraw police complaint. On Surender’s parents request the police complaint withdrawn,” said Nagesh, a relative of the victim.

“A case under section 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused. The accused has been arrested,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma.

Union minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju condemned the incident. “This is a brutal case, will ask the Police commissioner for factual report in the case,” Rijiju said.

Even Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia expressed shock over the gruesome incident while hitting out at the Delhi Police, saying instead of "harassing" AAP legislators the force should focus on security of people. “Shocking incident in Delhi of stabbing of 21-yr old woman. Delhi Police needs to focus on citizen's security than harassing AAP MLAs,” he tweeted.
