NEW DELHI:  The grand old party Congress which ruled Delhi for 15 years was reduced to third position in the recently held municipal elections on Wednesday.

“In the run up to the elections infighting among the state leadership of the party left the ground level workers of Congress party demoralized and disappointed.  Despite registering an increase in vote share of 12 percent, the party failed to project itself as a serious contender to the voters of Delhi” said Akash Dhakia worker of Congress party.

National Vice- President Rahul Gandhi kick-started the campaign for the party at Ramlila Ground, with former union minister Jairam Ramesh , Shashi Tharoor and former Finance minister P. Chidambaram campaigning for the party.

Quite unsatisfied by the performance even after winning good mandate in the neighboring state of Punjab the Delhi Congress Pradesh Committee president Ajay Maken resigned from the post.

P C Chakko who was Delhi state in-charge also resigned from the position and sent his resignation to the party chief Sonia Gandhi.

Days before the results were to be announced the in-fighting amongst the senior leadership of the party came out in the open. Senior leader Arvinder Singh Lovely and AK Walia hitting out at Ajay Maken for not considering the party workers while distributing tickets of the municipality elections

Similar was the case after the embarrassing defeat on Wednesday when president Ajay Maken hit out at former Delhi Congress president and one of the tallest leaders of the party in the city Sheila Dikshit.

“Sheila Dikshit and his son have been trying to malign my image for the last two years; her son Sandeep was instigating leaders against me in the party. So the aggressiveness that they showed against me, I am not capable of that” said Maken after the early trends of the Delhi municipality elections.
