NEW DELHI: Union sports and youth affairs minister Vijay Goel has written to LG Anil Baijal regarding the degrading situation of Chandni Chowk – the symbol of India’s rich heritage.

Goel has requested the LG to intervene and take measures to restore the beauty and originality of the historic place. He has also urged if the area can be developed on the lines of the ambitious Smart City project.

Goel, who has been a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Chandni Chowk, has earlier worked for the development and restoration of Chandni Chowk’s rich cultural heritage and grand history. In his letter to LG Baijal has stated that the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Board had many suggestions pertaining to the area’s development and restoration and these must be implemented to save Chandni Chowk.

Last year Goel had met deputy Delhi CM Manish Sisodia to discuss these issues but nothing has been done so far to implement the suggestions for the betterment of the area and even the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Board has failed to work in this regard.

Goel has time and again reiterated the fact that the beauty of Chandni Chowk has suffered due to illegal construction, civic issues like electricity, water, parking, encroachment and so on. He stressed that it’s high time that the authorities take a serious stand and resolve the pending issues to conserve and preserve the cultural richness and golden heritage of Chandni Chowk.
