NEW DELHI: In the wake of mounting piles of garbage in the national capital, the Supreme Court on Monday asked senior lawyer Colin Gonsalves to prepare a suggestion list as to how the issue can be tackled.

A division bench of the top court, headed by Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur, said the piling of garbage should be reduced and proper waste management must be implemented here.

In the previous hearing, the apex court criticised the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for failing to dispose of the garbage accumulated in the national capital and not taking effective steps to handle it.

The apex court expressed its displeasure with the failure of the L-G office for claiming power over the municipal corporations' offices, but not taking effective steps to handle the garbage issue.

This came a day after it asked the Centre and Delhi government to clarify who could be held responsible for clearing the "mountain loads of garbage" in Delhi.

On a related note, the court has scheduled the matter for further hearing after two weeks.
