People in agency region of Visakhapatnam on Sunday woke up to a blanket of thick fog covering most of the area with mercury levels reportedly dropping to as low as 2 degree Celsius in Lambasingi, the highest point in Visakhapatnam district, and to 5 degrees Celsius in Chintapalli region.

As the region is close to Odisha, where cold wave conditions are currently prevalent, its effect is also being felt in the Visakha Agency area. Further, being a mountainous region, the temperature decrease is more than what it is elsewhere, say experts. Last year, Lambasingi had recorded sub-zero temperatures, they recalled.

“We are experiencing a gradual fall in the temperature here and the variation of two to three degrees can be seen in the isolated pockets at elevated points like Lambasingi. At Chintapalli Regional Agriculture Research Station, we determine the temperature for the area based on the recording of Automatic Weather Station, but there is no such facility in Lambasingi,” explained N Gopal Rao, associate director of research, RARS Chintapalli.

The minimum temperature in Lambasingi is being said to be lowest temperature so far in the state, but the Met department says that it could not confirm the same officially, as they have no observatory in the area to determine the same scientifically.
