Slain Greyhounds inspector K Prasad Babu was posthumously awarded Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award, on the occasion of the Republic Day in New Delhi on Sunday. Prasad’s father Venkatramana Naidu received the award from President Pranab Mukherjee. This is the first time that a police officer from the State was conferred the Ashok Chakra, which is usually awarded to soldiers. “Police should draw inspiration from Prasad,” DGP B Prasada Rao said. A native of Martur in Visakhapatnam district, Prasad laid down his life fighting Maoists on April 17 last year near the Andhra-Chhattisgarh border. About 70 Maoists had carried out IED blasts and fired on the unit led by Babu. Babu charged towards the Maoists, killing nine of them. The next day, during evacuation when 19 commandos were to be picked up, the Maoists attacked the chopper. Babu kept them at bay single-handed and saved four of his colleagues. He died in the process. Chaitanya, Prasad’s sister, said, “The Government recognised him as a great son of the nation. He was inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s works.”
