HYDERABAD: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials seized gold bars weighing 9 kg and worth `2.39 crore kept hidden on a SpiceJet flight that arrived at the Rajiv Gandhi international airport at Shamshabad here from New Delhi on Tuesday night. However, no one claimed the gold.
Additional director of DRI’s Hyderabad unit MK Singh said they had thwarted yet another attempt to smuggle gold into the country by seizing the unclaimed gold of foreign origin. “The aircraft had earlier been run as an international flight (No. SG16) from Dubai to Ahmedabad. Later, it operated on the Delhi-Hyderabad domestic route. On rummaging around in the aircraft, about 9 kg of gold was found concealed behind the pushback cushion of two seats,” Singh said.
The DRI officials suspect that the gold might have been transported illegally from Dubai. As tight checks take place at airports, the passenger may have left the gold in the flight.
