Water board to make meters available at subsidised rate

Consumers will now find it easy to procure water meters as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board.

HYDERABAD: Consumers will now find it easy to procure water meters as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has empanelled 10 agencies for various Operation and Maintenance divisions for the distribution of the meters as per price fixed by the board.

Earlier, the board had announced a one-time opportunity for customers to fix their water meters before September 30. The action was initiated after officials found that of the 8.70 lakh water connections, only 1.60 lakh had meters while the remaining 7.10 lakh were billed as un-metered connections.

In a bid to ensure that all the connections are metered, the board has mooted penalising consumers by levying double the normal charges if they do not install meters within the deadline. The board will also launch a publicity campaign on the advantages of fixing meters.

Meanwhile, managers have been told to ensure that the meter fixation details are entered in the RBS system of the Water Board.

Meters to reduce non revenue water

Water meters will help increase the accountability of water thereby reducing the non revenue water. Consumers will also be benefited by paying for the actual water consumed and thereby reducing the disputes on account of levying the docket average or double the charges that would otherwise be levied as per Rule 28 of water supply rules which empowers the board for the same.
