Hyderabad building collapse: Toll climbs to 11, NDRF calls off rescue operation

The building, in whose construction violations of rules have allegedly been found, came crashing down around 9 PM on Thursday.

HYDERABAD: After nearly 36 hours, the National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) personnel called off their rescue operations on Saturday after all the 11 bodies were retrieved after a newly-constructed building collapsed  at Nanakramguda here on Thursday night.  

A woman and her son were earlier rescued almost seven hours after collapse of the seven-storeyed building. 


Two teams of NDRF comprising about 80 personnel along with GHMC workers and Cyberabad police completed the rescue operations. 


Those killed have been identified as Kotipalli Polinaidu (30), Venkata Lakshmi (25), Piridi Polinaidu (25), P Narayanamma (23), P Mohan (3), Nadagalla Shankar Rao (23), Durga Rao (25), N Sambaiah (40), N Paidamma (35), N Gauriswari (13) all hailing from Chilakalapally, Balajipet mandal of Vizianagaram and Shiva (28) from Chhattisgarh. 


Rekha (25), a woman from Chhattisgarh, and her four-year-old son Deepak were pulled out alive from the rubble on Friday morning and are undergoing treatment in a private hospital. 
After conducting the postmortem examination at Osmania  Hospital, the bodies were sent to their native places.


Municipal administration minister K T Rama Rao, who supervised the rescue operations, said the builder Satyanarayana Singh alias Sattu Singh has been arrested in Kerala and added that stringent action would be taken against the guilty in the incident.


The government has also decided to appoint an enquiry committee under MAUD secretary Navin Mittal and the report would be submitted in 15 days. The committee will suggest measures to prevent recurrence of similar incidents, Rama Rao said.


Police had booked a case of negligence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Satyanarayana Singh for constructing the building without permission and in violation of all rules. The state government has announced `10 lakh ex gratia for the kin of those killed and `1 lakh to the injured persons.
