Looking Beyond Identities

HYDERABAD:

How many times have you boarded Samjhauta Express?

If you haven’t, then explore #SamjhoToh Express by Rubaroo, a city-based youth organisation engaged to create an inclusive society through its activism and campaigns. Samjho Toh Express was another such campaign to internalise the need to understand the ‘other’. Around 70 people from different walks of life attended the event on Sunday.

There were posters and flyers at the open space at Lamakaan, where the event was held. People took up their seats and a wheel-of-fortune like game began where the organisers asked the audience a question about their favourite patriotic movie. Speaking more about this one of the attendees Daneesh Majid said, “We were divided into four communities: Muslims, OBC, Homosexuals and Women. It was an activity in which the groups were asked what is the one stereotype thought others have about you. And the results were unbelievable!” A month-long journey that Samjho Toh Express is, it will focus on exploring identities of people and challenge their notions about some stereotypes they hold about the identity. One of the founders of Rubaroo, Monisha Vemavarapu said, “It was beautiful to see the depth of the conversations  that the attendees had to share. People can contact us through our Facebook page.”
