14 Dalit Faculty Members Quit their Jobs in the University of Hyderabad

They condemned the remarks of Smriti Irani, who stated, the committee decided to expel the scholars was headed by a Dalit faculty member.

HYDERABAD: Extending their solidarity to students who are on huger strike for justice to Rohit Vemula, around 14 Dalit faculty members in the University of Hyderabad (UoH), on Thursday resigned to their administrative posts and several more are likely to follow them. The resigned posts include key posts like Controller of Examination, Warden, Deans and Chief Medical Office of the university.

The faculty members, has also condemned the remarks of Union Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Smriti Irani, who stated, the committee decided to expel the scholars was headed by a Dalit faculty member.

The Dalit faculty members, under the banner of UoH SC/ST Teachers and Officers Forum, unanimously decided to leave their administration positions and submitted their resignation letters to the administration on Thursday. Prof. V Krishna, the Controller of Examination of UoH was among the faculty who resigned. He said, “We are with the students. This was a collective decision taken by all of us. So far 10 to 15 of us have resigned. More will follow.”
