HYDERABAD: At least four people in east Anand Bagh in Malkajgiri limits have fallen victims to dengue in the past few months.
A 26-year-old Sandeep, from the locality slipped into critical stage as his platelet count dropped low. The youth’s father said as there was delay in treatment at government hospitals, he was taken to a private hospital.

Residents of the locality, said that a nala, stagnant water in unused swimming pool, and garbage dumps in the locality have become breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Officials of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme-Telangana Unit were informed of the situation.

Sandeep’s father Yellanna said his son showed signs of dengue from first week of October.
“After running some tests, we took him to Fever Hospital. Doctors prescribed some medicines. However, on October 10, his condition deteriorated. Doctors at Fever Hospital suggested that he be taken to Osmania General Hospital,” Yellanna said. He added that there was long delay in transfusing platelets to Sandeep and it was done only after repeated requests.

Yellannna said that besides his son and an old-aged man, two 14-year-olds and 15-year-old teenager were also diagnosed with dengue.
A 65-year-old man, Narasimha Rao, who recovered from dengue, said mosquitoes are a menace in their locality. Yellanna said their complaints to officials concerned did not elicit any response.
Meanwhile, additional director of National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme, Dr S Prabhavathi said people can pour any used oil in stagnant water to get rid of mosquitoes.
“Larvae breathe through siphon projected out of water into air. When oil forms a layer over water, the supply of oxygen is cut and larva dies,” she said.
Number of Dengue cases
As of October 19, a total of 1,716 dengue cases were reported this year in Telangana. However, details of many dengue patients who are attended at private hospitals are not passed on to the officials.
