Wedding of mining baron’s daughter under CBI lens

HYDERABAD: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement of Directorate (ED) and Income-Tax (IT) departments, which are investigating former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy’s illegal mining cases, have kept tabs on Reddy’s daughter Brahmani’s wedding to be held in November.

The mining baron recently sent Rs 7,000-worth “talking” wedding cards with a one minute video.
The video has gone viral on social networking sites and brought the festivities surrounding the ceremonies under the scanner.
According to sources, investigation agencies, obtained inputs that Reddy spent Rs 7,000 in designing each wedding card.

Sources told Express that the CBI officials had obtained inputs regarding the function, revealing that crores of rupees are being spent to celebrate the wedding in an extravagant manner.
“Even though it is a private function, we are keeping a close watch on the activities especially on the spending amount, guests attending, and other factors. They spent Rs 7,000 for designing and preparing each wedding card. Think of how much they are prepared to spend on other arrangements,” sources said.
CBI and ED officials have already attached the assets of Janardhan Reddy and his wife Lakshmi Aruna, worth of around Rs 50 crore to Rs 70 crore,  including costly cars, choppers and immovable assets in connection with the illegal mining cases.  Following this, the I-T department reportedly served notices to Reddy to pay taxes for possessing illegal assets, including jewellery that were not shown in his I-T returns.
Janardhan Reddy was released from prison in 2015 after spending almost three years in jail over illegal mining cases.
In September, 2011,
Hyderabad CBI officials had arres ed Reddy and others in connection with illegal mining cases.
