HYDERABAD: In a span of a week, two medicos from Osmania Medical College committed suicide. On Tuesday, after receiving the news of the alleged suicide of MBBS first year student Y Sai Kumar Reddy, people in the college wondered what drove the young student to resort to the extreme step.

Since the academic year for MBBS first year students began only on October 17, students and staff felt academic pressure could not have been the reason for the alleged suicide. Orientation classes begun on October 8. Sai Kumar was allotted a room in one of the newly constructed hostels in the college premises in  Koti.

“I spoke to Sai Kumar and he sounded confident. Other students were nervous and I counselled them on how will it affect them. I did not give attention to Sai Kumar since he was confident,” said a fourth year MBBS student of the Osmania Medical College (OMC).

A photo of the deceased student was placed on a table at entrance of the college on Tuesday, where students, staff and professors stopped to find why did the student commit suicide.

Professors who gathered near the photo discussed what could have been the reasons and thought only his classmates would know about it. But they too were clueless about the reasons.

His classmates and hostel mates said Sai Kumar did not give the impression of having any issues and he behaved like any other person.

In another case, a 27-year-old woman, B Sravani who was pursuing post graduation at OMC, committed suicide on October 19 by injecting water mixed with anesthesia.

Meanwhile,  Principal of OMC, Dr Aruna Ramaiah said a team of associate professors and two students left to meet the family of Sai Kumar to figure out the reasons for suicide.
