Verdict doesn’t go down well with city qazis

The qazis in Hyderabad assert that the court of law should not intervene with the Islamic laws.

HYDERABAD: On the day the Supreme Court (SC) pronounced its verdict barring the practice of triple talaq for six months and urged the Parliament to bring a new law, the qazis in Hyderabad assert that the court of law should not intervene with the Islamic laws. Hamid Mohammad Khan, the president of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (Telangana and Odisha) who also serves as a qazi from the Sunni community in the city, said, “The very fact that the SC has asked Parliament to bring a new law on Triple Talaq makes it evident that it is not unconstitutional. In other communities, the couples turn old fighting divorce cases for years, hence by the time they are liberated from a troubled marriage, they cross the right age to marry. This move taken by the court of law is condemnable.”

Meanwhile, Ilyas Shamsi, a Khateeb (a person who delivers sermon during Eid prayers) from Jama Masjid in Koti, said: “Triple Talaq is a three-time process and Muslims who practice instant triple talaq is violating Islam, not following it.” Some qazis even went ahead to say that it is not the courts’ right to violate Allah’s command.

The verdict, on the other hand, was hailed by many. “We welcome the judgment as Triple Talaq discriminates women against men. We also hope that it leads to a reform,” said Jameela Nishat, founder of Shaheen NGO.
