HYDERABAD: GHMC will adopt a new approach to road-widening in Greater Hyderabad, which is facing road blocks for a variety of reasons such as delay in getting consent from owners for acquiring the required portions of lands, shifting of utilities, shifting of construction and debris wastes and translocation of trees. Only after getting owners’ consent for acquisition of their lands and paying the compensation will the corporation invite tenders for demolition of the structures, shifting of utilities like water and sewerage pipelines, street poles  and translocation of trees etc, GHMC chief city planner S Devender Reddy told Express.

Road-widening is held up if any of the above said issues is not settled on time, thereby causing inconvenience to  road users. To avoid these problems, the GHMC has identified 34 important roads for simultaneously taking up structural valuation, structural compensation,  shifting of utilities and translocation of trees. Heretofore, after getting the owner’s consent for land acquisition, there used to be an abnormal  delay in finalising the structural value of the affected building, shifting of utilities and other matters.

The 34 roads are being taken up as per the master plan and keeping and the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) as well. Teams have been constituted for speeding up filing of land acquisition proposal, negotiations with the affected owners and coordination with the executive engineers (projects) concerned and special-grade collectors (land acquisition). The zonal city planner will be the nodal officer to monitor the work everyday and submit compliance reports to the CCP on every Monday on the progress of road-widening works.
