HYDERABAD: Overspeeding is one of the major causes for the road accidents that occur on the Outer Ring Road (ORR), a study by Central Road Research Institute of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research  has confirmed. The body carried out a Road Safety Audit on the operational phase of the ORR.

The study said about 50 per cent of big cars, 30 per cent of small cars, 7 per cent of light commercial vehicles and about one per cent of heavy trucks exceeded the prescribed speed limits on the ORR. In the spot speed studies conducted at about 29 locations on the ORR stretch, the maximum speed of big cars was observed to be 208 kmph followed by small cars at 180 kpmh, LCVs at 111 kmph, two axle trucks at 100 kmph and multi axle trucks at 98 kmph, HMDA Metropolitan Commissioner T Chiranjeevul told Express.

Due to overspeeding, a driver is unable to control the vehicle making even a small error end in fatal crashes or vehicles crashing into medians. The was aimed at mitigating the rising road accidents on the Expressway and identifying inadequacies to improve, enhance safety of all road users by suggesting the safety measures. P6
