Hyderabad to get a smart transport system soon

The Intelligent Transport System will disseminate real-time info for better traffic management

HYDERABAD: The Intelligent Transport System (ITS), a first-of-its kind in the country, will be implemented in Hyderabad soon to help commuters get the latest update on road and traffic conditions, reduce the risk of accidents, enhance communication and response during emergencies, and help motorists drive safer and faster.

ITS is a set of technologies that collates and disseminates real-time information for better traffic management such as traffic flow, road condition, details of any accidents and weather condition.
The system processes the gathered information and sends it out to drivers through short messaging services (SMS) and on FM stations to help them plan their journey better.
It is being initiated by the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL), a wing of Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).
With the state government giving green signal a few days ago for Phase-1 project, HMDA will issue work orders after signing an agreement with ARS Traffic and Transport Technology BV (Netherlands) for implementing the works at the earliest, HMDA metropolitan commissioner T Chiranjeevulu told Express.

The project costs `55.80 crore and is being taken up with loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The ARS TT&T will design, supply, install, commission, remedy any defects of the equipment, and operate and maintain for five years. The construction period will be 18 months.
HGCL chief general manager B Anand Mohan said, “If there are traffic jams on a particular stretch of road, commuters can delay their start or take an alternative route.”
For the authorities, it will help them manage the traffic better with information on traffic management, emergency situations, disaster management, transport- related electronic payments, and financial transactions systems to collect toll and road taxes online, and law enforcement.
