HYDERABAD: THREE persons from Kurnool district who attempted to smuggle red sanders were arrested by Shamshabad police on Sunday. Police seized 51 logs of red sanders from the accused and handed over the logs to the forest department for probe.

Police suspect an organised racket in the red sanders smuggling case busted as investigation revealed that two persons were following the auto in which logs were being smuggled and escaped into the city. During the wee hours on Sunday, the patrolling team identified an auto, plying on the service road in the opposite direction. The accused had turned the auto back on seeing a police party conducting vehicle checks at Thondupalli village. “As the auto suddenly got off the main road and took the service road to go in opposite direction, the vehicle checking team grew suspicious and intercepted the auto. The auto consisted 51 logs of red sanders concealed under the seat in a bag wrapped with blankets. The driver and his two associates were detained,” said inspector K Uma Maheshwar Rao.

The accused were identified as auto driver B Naresh (20), P Ramana (22) and M Pamuleti (24) of Rudravaram in Kurnool. Questioning revealed that the trio was followed by two others namely Mahendra and Prasad also from Kurnool. The detainees told police that Mahendra and Prasad convinced them that they would follow the auto in a car and keep a watch. The police are searching for the duo who escaped.
