HYDERABAD: The two women who died at the Gandhi Hospital suffered Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC): Heavy bleeding, breech baby (fetus in their womb turned upside down).
Lakhsmi suffered from head injury fifteen days before her delivery date and gradually developed epileptic seizures. Sources said that she underwent tests to know the extent of injury. Tablets were prescribed but the medication course was discontinued and she again developed seizures.
However, the delivery was to be taken up and cesarean surgery was performed on her. She suffered from heavy bleeding and doctors performed second surgery on her to treat the medical situation.
In case of Ramiza Jabeen, the patient was already suffering from Placenta Previa and Fibroids. Doctors thought of taking up Laproscopy but did away with it and performed C-Section, sources said. While there were no complications during the delivery, she too suffered from DIC. Even though Hysterectomy was performed on her, Ramiza could not be saved.
When the women suffered from DIC, doctors paced to treat the condition. However, they were rattled as they did not know reason for the situation.
Lakshmi died on Sunday and Ramiza on Monday. On the day of death, officials in the health and family welfare department were informed of the issue.
Of late, maternal deaths are given importance after directions from central government. The focus increased further in the state after death of five women who underwent C-Section surgery at Niloufer Hospital.
It is learnt that, besides the two deaths, there have been no maternal deaths at Gandhi Hospital in the past two-months. Every month, a meeting to review maternal deaths in hospitals in a district, would be held by collector of the district, as per orders from Central government, doctors said. Family members of the deceased are asked to attend the meeting.
