The first ray of light

HYDERABAD: The series of photographs by K. Ramesh Babu on display at Samanya sastram art gallery are based on the concept, ‘endapoda’, when the first rays from the Sun reach the earth at dawn.
Kandukuri Ramesh Babu has been passionately involved from a very long time in unveiling the common man as being ‘not so common’ through multiple media. The unsung, unheard of heroes have been given the well-deserved prominence by Ramesh Babu. He captured the lives of ordinary men and women in series of articles in dailies and featured programs in television channels. The current exhibition has been sponsored by Dept. of Language and Culture, Telangana Government.

The photographs on display unveil the moments wherein the warm, soothing sunlight is welcomed . While one of the pictures depicts a small baby brought out in the sun yet another one shows an old man. A girl is captured starting for school in her uniform yet another picture shows a transparent water container lying on the ground. Its reflection creates an abstract play of forms that enthral. This photograph also contains a few littered objects on the ground along with a couple of leaves and flowers, it symbolically brings forth environmental concerns and the need for conservation of the natural elements.

The people are captured soaking themselves in the rays and acknowledging the sun’s magnificence. They also seem to be thanking it for rising and for bringing along with it the promise of a new day. The photographs excel in capturing the energy, the abstract form of flow life which originates from the sun and gets dispersed onto the earth’s surface without any classification, distinction or divide. When it falls on the surface of the earth it spreads its magic unanimously. The artist tells more about his theme by saying,

“The play of light and shade is the superficial, visual effect of sunlight. Sun is the source of energy for all forms of life on Earth. It emanates a kind of spiritual power and strength. My photographs zoom into that innate, intrinsic and sublime powers of sunlight. The warmth of the Sun soothes the soul, in the way a mother strokes her child’s head with affection. Rural life stands still for some time at dawn, the farmers and women bask in the warmth of the sun for few minutes before starting their mundane work.” Contrary to this people living in apartments, in cities often forget to receive this sublime gift of nature from the Sun.
The show will be on at
Samanyasastram Art Gallery till February 12
