HYDERABAD: The right hand of a 17-year-old-girl had to be amputated as it developed infection after blood transfusion. She is awaiting amputation of the other hand and two legs also. Family members of the girl alleged that it was due to medical negligence.
Vaishnavi, a resident of Moula Ali here, was taken to Prasad hospital in Nacharam on January 3 after she complained of giddiness. The doctors at the hospital suggested that she should be given blood transfusion. After being given blood, she developed infection in her right hand and was shifted her to a corporate hospital. The doctors there told the family that her hand had to be amputated as it developed infection.
Shyam Sundar Rao, Vaishnavi’s uncle said: “Dr Suma Prasad of Prasad Hospital suggested that blood should be transfused to the girl when she was first taken there. After giving blood, the doctors said another unit of blood has to be given. When blood was being transfused to her, Vaishnavi complained of nausea and body aches. After being administered an injection, she fell asleep. But the next morning her hand turned blue,” he said.
It was on the morning on January 4, she was taken to a corporate hospital and admitted to Advance Critical Care Unit. The next day doctors said that her hand was infected and on January 6, her hand was amputated.
“Doctors said that infection has spread to the entire body and fresh blood has to be transfused. But her left hand and both legs also turned blue after that. Though the doctors said medication will help in bringing down the infection, but it did not,” Shyam Sundar said. Now her other hand and both legs have to be amputated.
