Cyberabad police get Automatic Fingerprint Identification System

Cyberabad police on Friday acquired Automatic Fingerprint Identification System to improve efficiency in the detection of criminals.

HYDERABAD: Cyberabad police on Friday acquired Automatic Fingerprint Identification System to improve efficiency in the detection of criminals. The device has a live palm-print scanner which enables field-level officers to instantly verify veracity of suspects using an Android phone.

Officials have been using the Fingerprints Analysis and Criminal Tracing System (FACTS), which was acquired in 1999, through which fingerprints are collected through ink, slab and rolling method and then uploaded for analysis.

The new system has a device, Mobile Security Check Device (MSCD), which can be attached to any Android-based mobile/tablet to detect the images of the suspect just by the touch of fingers and share with the AFIS server for automatic matching against the database for real time identification in the field.
Elaborating on the new equipment on Friday, commissioner Sandeep Shandilya said, “Components like palm-print live scanners, high-definition web cameras and mobile security check devices will be supplied to police stations soon. These will be helpful to patrolling and Rakshak personnel and also during ‘nakabandhi’.”

The live scanners will be installed at the commissionerate’s headquarters, and Pet Basheerabad, Kukatpally, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and Shadnagar police stations. The new system and devices, expected to increase the chances of identification of suspects using the fingerprints, can take multiple copies, share data online across the state and identify criminals from partial chance prints. The self-correction system allows arrangement of prints even if they are taken in a wrong manner.
