HYDERABAD: Senior Congress leader Marri Sashidhar Reddy has suggested the State government to adopt the ‘Four Waters Concept’ formulated by irrigation expert the late T Hanumantha Rao instead of constructing lift irrigation projects on a large scale to irrigate agricultural lands in the state.

He was speaking at a round table here on Wednesday on the occasion of World Water Day.
He said that while `7 lakh need to be spent on irrigating an acre of land by constructing huge lift irrigation projects such as Kaleshwaram, just `7,000 is enough to provide sufficient water under the Four Waters Concept.

“Through dams and lift irrigation projects water is provided only for one crop a year but the Four Water Concept will ensure water for three crops a year with such a minimal investment,” he said.

“Further, this methodology will not only provide irrigation water but also increase soil moisture and recharge ground water. Gottigaripalli, near Zaheerabad, has been successfully implementing the concept and has overcome successive droughts,” he said.

Reddy said he would seek speaker’s  permission to make a presentation before the Assembly Committee on Environment on   this conservation concept.
