Child marriage of five-year-old girl to nine-year-old boy stopped in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: A child marriage between a nine-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl in Mambapur village of Peddemul mandal of Vikarabad district was stalled on Tuesday.

It was going to be performed as part of their caste-based tradition in the nomadic population of Bhailu Kammari community from Karnataka.

“All arrangements were made by the time we went,” informed E Venkatesh, Childline district coordinator, Vikarabad. Officials from police, revenue and women and child welfare department were present at the rescue operation.

While the girl has been shifted to Shishu Vihar in Yousufguda in the city, the boy is still with the family, the coordinator further informed.
