Meanwhile, all the five A1 category railway stations in the SCR zone — Secunderabad, Vijayawada (4), Kacheguda (11), Hyderabad (16) and Tirupati (19) are in the list of 20 clean stations of Indian Railways. Five stations which have been ranked in A category include — Mancherial (5) Warangal (8), Kazipet (17), Chirala (25) and Nizamabad (26).

Suresh Prabhu said, “Indian Railways started third party cleanliness index of stations last year and railways have accomplished a significant improvement in cleanliness at stations. This index instills competitive spirit among the stations.” He also appreciated NGOs and  student groups who came forward to beautify the stations.

The report was based on the process of cleanliness in the parking area, main entry area, main platform, waiting room  and passenger feedback. A 24x7 control room was set up and images were geo-tagged to monitor progress.

The survey was conducted through interviews with respondents on the questionnaire on cleanliness indicators, which was done face to face by survey teams by visiting each of the 407 stations across 16 Zonal Railways.
