'Let’s bring back natural birth'

HYDERABAD: A week after Mother’s Day, Happy Mom and LifeCell took a step forward to celebrate the occasion with Mommy’s Day Out, an event for pregnant women and new moms, to create awareness about natural birth and breastfeeding at Hotel Radisson in the city.

The fun-filled and educative session was inaugurated by chief guests, Ruchika Sharma - celebrity chef, Kiran Dembla - celebrity fitness trainer, and Dr. Evita Fernandez - head of Fernandez Hospital.

Organised by Happy Mom, a firm which provides a holistic approach to childbirth education, the event held sessions on natural birth choices, breastfeeding, nutritious food pattern for babies, belly mapping, baby wearing and dancing through pregnancy.

During the session, Dr Vinodha, a childbirth educator at Happy Mom and member of BPNI (Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India) said “Telangana tops C-Section deliveries. We have a C-Section Rate of 74.9 percent against WHO’s 10 to 15 percent benchmark”.

“Lack of knowledge of natural birthing, incorrect information of natural delivery, fear of the pain in natural labour, lack of confidence in mother might be the reasons for high C-Section delivery rates,” she added.

Promoting the idea of getting a midwife during pregnancy and labour, Dr. Evita said, “One should always go for a midwife during their pregnancy and labour. Midwives give the best care and advice at this stage of life, as obstetricians are busy with many cases and can’t focus completely on a particular patient.”
