JEE advanced exam: Students say physics paper was easy; cut-off marks might increase this year

HYDERABAD: The Joint Entrance Examination- JEE (Advanced) for admissions into Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) was conducted here, on Sunday.

Physics, which is usually tougher to crack than Chemistry or Mathematics turned out to be easier this year, an opinion echoed by students as well as experts who analysed the paper. Physics becoming easier can be attributed to most of the questions being theoretical and not requiring much critical thinking and having few numericals which are usually time consuming.

The exam was conducted in two parts, Paper-I and II, both having questions from all three subjects and bearing the same total score of 183 marks each. Paper II was found to be a little more time consuming and difficult than Paper I by the students, thanks to around seven or eight time consuming Mathematics questions. However, compared to last year, Chemistry and Mathematics were both found to be slightly tougher.

PVRK Murthy, chairman of Sri Gayatri Educational Institutions, said, “The requirement of marks to score top ranks in the Physics might increase this year as many questions were easier compared to last. In Mathematics, while some questions were tougher in the Paper II than Paper I, the overall marks required to secure top rank in Mathematics is also expected to increase. Chemistry had more tougher questions than physics or mathematics.”

Students optimistic

K Akhil, one of the candidates who appeared for the exam said, “I found Physics to be a lot easier than last year. I even found the JEE Advanced to be easier than JEE Mains. There were not many questions in JEE Advanced which were complicated, time consuming and none required application of concepts. Although Mathematics was a difficult in Paper II, it was easier in Paper I which made me more confident in attempting Paper II.”
