Two youngsters die while trying to escape drunk-driving checks

A desperate bid by two youngsters to escape a drunk-driving check at Langar Houz in Hyderabad led to their death late Saturday night.

HYDERABAD: A desperate bid by two youngsters to escape a drunk-driving check at Langar Houz in Hyderabad led to their death late Saturday night.Death was instantaneous for the duo as their motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck. The truck driver too was in an inebriated state.

According to police, at around 12.30 am on Sunday, Tolichowki Traffic Inspector Satish and his team were conducting a special drunk-driving check at Bapughat under Langar Houz police limits.
Two youngsters Srinu and Rajesh, residents of Budwel in Ranga Reddy district, were riding home after enjoying the weekend in the city, said Sub-Inspector J Jagan.

Upon noticing the police at Bapughat, the duo tried to escape by taking a U-turn. However, in a bid to escape, they turned into the wrong lane and a truck coming from the opposite direction hit their motorcycle. “The truck was coming from TSPA junction towards Langar Houz. The truck driver, who was also in an inebriated condition, hit the bike. The duo – Srinu and Rajesh – died on the spot,” the SI said.
DCP (traffic) AV Ranganath said the truck driver was heavily drunk at the time of accident. “While approaching Langar Houz, the driver hit a moving car and even our police crane. Our crane was badly damaged. After that, he rammed into the motorcycle. We detained the truck driver, a native of Kodangal,” the DCP said.

Police registered cases against the truck driver for drunk and negligent driving causing death.
