YUVA: Hyderabad’s own wellness centre for teens

HYDERABAD: Adolescence. A phase in everyone’s life. A time filled with changes, confusions and conflicts. This turbulent period is filled with many physical, mental and societal issues that wreck havoc in the teens life. If not given a proper space to discuss and divulge, these may affect the well being of the young generation. To provide ‘Preventive, Promotive and Curative Health for Adolescents’, a centre like YUVA has been created in the city. This is one of a kind initiative taken up by Niloufer Hospitals.

YUVA is an information, guidance and health centre for the teens situated at the Niloufer Hospital, Lakdikapul. It helps the youth in understanding the concept of puberty and its changes along with imparting like skills. It aims to create awareness among the youngsters and provide them with a safe forum for discussion on various issues. Whether its physical, emotional or societal, each problem needs to be addressed. YUVA provides a safe platform to air these concerns.

The centre currently  has a doctor and a psychologist present at all times who cater to both the physical and mental health. Although the staff wasn’t restricted to two members at the beginning, the state division of 2013 seems to have complicated the matter. Despite of that, the service given here is effective, practical and  absolutely free of cost. Moreover the staff has ensured a very calm and approachable outlook to put their young friends at ease. “We have a very adolescent friendly setting, where the kids can talk to us freely...We ensure their privacy,” says Dr Himabindu Singh, professor of Pediatrics at Niloufer Hospital. Teens can unburden themselves of their traumas and speak without being afraid.

YUVA has aligned with SHE, Bharosa  and various other reputed foundations who have taken up a stand for such a noble cause. The youth deserves to know about such a place where their concerns would be heard. Where they would get proper counsel and help.
