Cases registered against two for supplying animal fat to bakeries

HYDERABAD: Cakes, bread and other baked savouries being sold across the city, however delicious, may not be safe for consumption.Several confectionaries were found to be using animals fat, especially of buffaloes, cows among other animals. Addition of fat is said to make the preparations delicious but could prove harmful when consumed.


On Thursday, GHMC apprehended some persons in Patancheru and Ramchandrapuram circles for illegally storing animal fats and supplying them to various bakeries for preparation of cakes, breads and other baked goods.


The Health and Sanitation wing along with Veterinary wing officials during an inspection in Patencheru circle zeroed down to a house in Shanthinagar. Azam and Ejaz at Noori’s Residence, Katika Basthi in Patencheru allegedly collected fat from slaughtered buffaloes and cows.


On being questioning by GHMC officials, the accused persons admitted to officials that, after converting collected fat into oil, the same is supplied to bakeries. GHMC officials claimed that the fat is collected from illegal slaughter houses and transported in vehicles in the night.      


The GHMC registered cases against the accused persons under section 521, 539,, 596 and 487 of GHMC Act 1955, he added. Singh said that addition of fat was adulteration of food items and was unfit for human consumption. GHMC Deputy Commissioner of Circle 13, M Vijaya Kumar lodged a complaint with Divisional Superintendent of Police, Patancheru against the said accused persons. Meanwhile, the police is investigating the case.
