Coming soon, underground garbage bins at Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills

HYDERABAD: For better management of waste and to improve the ambience in the city, underground bin system is going to be a reality soon in city. GHMC in coordination with the CSR initiatives of Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited (REEL) and Kamineni Hospitals will procure and install underground bins on a pilot basis at two points of Khairatabad and Jubilee Hills Circles in about three months time.

Presently, all the garbage bins kept at public places are an eyesore with garbage littered all around and GHMC mooted for the underground bin project. The advantage of underground dustbins is that they improve the aesthetics of the city and free up surface space for other uses. There is no offensive odour and rodents and stray animals cannot reach the piled-up garbage. The GHMC Standing Committee gave green signal to install the underground bins in the city and suggested officials to establish such system at Charminar and Zoo Park.

GHMC officials informed that with approval pilot project, the process to procure and install the underground bins and starting of operations would take three months time. They said that the underground bins would be leak proof bins with no bad odour emanating. They are completely closed system with no overflowing of waste. The system is completely underground hence vandalism, theft, burnt or breaking them are reduced. Ergonomically designed bins for the easy disposal of waste by public and better utilisation of spaces in commercial areas.

The cost of the one bin is `5.50 lakh including installation, transportation with one year warranty. Since unloading of waste from the proposed underground bins requires special remote controlled knuckle boom crane mounted on truck with tipper body, the transportation and collection of waste from the  underground bins will be carried out by REEL themselves .

The major part of the bin will be under the ground with an inlet to drop the waste. Once the underground bin is full, it will be lifted out by specially designed vehicles and emptied by opening the bottom flaps without any leakage or overflow of the waste. This helps faster collection with minimum physical contact with the waste.
