HYDERABAD: A public interest litigation petition was filed in the Hyderabad High Court challenging the decision of the Telangana government in leasing out 10 acres of land belonging to Victoria Memorial Home residential school at Saroornagar in Ranga Reddy for construction of Rachakonda police commissionerate headquarters.

Petitioner VM Home Orphan old students association, represented by its president and retired teacher L Buchi Reddy,  submitted that the government’s decision to lease out the said land for the police commissionerate office construction is in violation of the Endowment given by late VI Nizam of Hyderabad for the specific purpose of providing education and shelter to the orphans of the state and also in violation of Telangana charitable and Hindu religious institutions and endowments Act, 1987.

Late Mir Mahaboob Ali Khan Bahadur had given about 73 acres of land in Saroornagar with key objective of educating orphan boys and girls belonging to the erstwhile Hyderabad state by providing free boarding facility. This property was registered under the AP Charitable and Hindu religious institutions and Endowment Act.

Now, the government has decided to lease out the land for a period of 11 years to the home department at a throwaway price of `1.25 per square yard, the petitioner pointed out.The petitioner association urged the court to declare the action of the state government in leasing out the land to home department as illegal and arbitrary. The matter is expected to come up for hearing on Tuesday.
