HYDERABAD: The historical Paigah Tombs, which come under the custody of the Department of Archaeology and Museums, were sanctioned funds for its restoration a few months ago. However, according to the caretakers of the Tombs, the said funds are not being utilised properly.
“As far as I know, funds have been earmarked for the development of these tombs many months ago. However, nothing has been released so far. A lot of aspects need to be developed and maintained, but they are lying in a state of neglect,” said the caretaker.

The tombs of the Paigah family nobles who served the Nizams in various capacities are buried in the bylines and amidst houses in Santosh Nagar. The tombs built with lime and mortar, more than 200 years ago, boast of intricate Indo-Islamic architecture. The stucco work is specifically appreciated. However, the exteriors of the domes have blackened over the years and the paint chipping off the walls is a common sight.

The wooden doors with intricate geometric jaalis, which add to the beauty of the tombs are also in a state of apathy, broken and unattended to.

Clarifying that there is no dearth for release of funds, NR Visalatchy, director, Department of Archaeology and Museums stated that works to develop and maintain Paigah Tombs will soon begin.
Under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, close to `100 crore has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Tourism to develop a heritage circuit in the city with plans to develop and maintain Qutb Shahi Tombs, Paigah Tombs, Hayat Bakshi Mosque and Raymond’s Tomb.

As per the plan, an interpretation centre, landscaping of the layout, surveillance cameras etc will begin soon, informed Burra Venkatesham, secretary to the government, Youth Advancement, Tourism and Culture Department.

“We had a review meeting on Monday morning and we will soon call for tenders for the development works to begin. The time frame for this scheme to be implemented is 36 months and by then it has to be completed,” said Venkatesham. There are three components in carrying out these works, he said.
