HYDERABAD:  IN what is seen as a major deviation from its plan, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has reportedly shelved the construction of three of the proposed six flyovers as part of the Strategic Road Development Project (SRDP) around KBR National park. This decision was taken due to the hurdles faced in the execution of the SRDP, as it stands, related to proposed tree felling outside the park and the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ).

GHMC had originally proposed six multi-level flyovers and grade separators but now it is learnt to have revised the SRDP plan and put construction of three of the flyovers on hold for the next two years at least. Now, the multi-level flyovers at KBR Park Entrance Junction, Road No 45, Jubilee Hills and Jubilee Hills Check Post Junction will be taken up while the flyovers at Maharaja Agrasen Junction (Road No 12), Cancer Hospital Junction (Road No 10 junction) and Film Nagar have been put on hold. The GHMC submitted a letter to the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department a few days ago asking for permission to take up construction of the first three multi-level flyovers and will take up works as soon as orders come.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and MAUD Minister K T Rama Rao in a recent meeting had told the GHMC to take up the construction in a phased manner with priority to busy junctions. The corridor from NFCL junction to Durgan Cheruvu forms a major corridor for traffic towards Hitech city, Gachibowli and Madhapur. Though the works were sanctioned in January 2016, they could not be taken up due to orders passed by the National Green Tribunal regarding proposed felling, or translocation of trees outside KBR national park. “The three flyovers we are taking up first do not fall under any ESZ,’’ the officer said.
