HYDERABAD: With the real estate booming in the city once again, the ‘supari’ gangs are on the prowl to target the businessmen investing on the outskirts of the city.

A notorious gang hailing from the city, which was all set to target businessmen to rob and extort money has been caught by the Cyberabad Special Operations Team (SOT) sleuths two days ago. Police also recovered three country-made revolvers from the suspects, which led the sleuths to probe if the gang was involved in hired-assassinations and also the illegal sale of weapons.

Prima facie, the police during questioning of the suspects found that they had purchased the country-made revolvers from Maharashtra through their associates. A few members of the gang were also earlier arrested by the Rachakonda commissionerate police and foiled their plans of extortion and robberies.

Confirming the apprehension of the gang, Cyberabad SOT Additional DCP M Dayananda Reddy said, “We have apprehended the gang possessing weapons. The probe is on to find if they have more associates in the city and also their motive to carry weapons, and also if they are into selling of the weapons to other criminals. They reportedly purchased the revolvers from Maharashtra and we are verifying it.” Responding to a query, the official said: “In-depth investigation is on and the details will be out soon.”

About two weeks ago, the Cyberabad police had caught two gangs comprising 10 members following a robbery. A team of four persons had robbed one Dasarath, a money transferring agent from Kothur when he was on the way to Tandur.
