Two Rural Medical Practitioners caught doing sex-determination tests in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The Special Operations Team of Rackakonda Police conducted a decoy operation on Tuesday at Surya Hospital in Madhapuram Village and nabbed three persons for having conducted illegal sex determination tests. This comes less than a week after a scanning centre in Yousufguda was sealed over similar charges.

SOT caught two Rural Medical Practitioners (RMPs) P Narsing Rao and P Sudhakar, who are not allowed to performed any diagnostic tests. Two hospitals owned by the accused RMPs hav been sealed. Yadadri-Bhongir District Medical and Health Officer Dr B Sambasiva Rao said that notices will be issued to Dr Raj Kumar, on whose name the scanning machine was bought and used.

Determining sex of fetus is prohibited under section 6 of The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostics Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act,1994. Sleuths have been keeping a close watch on the illegal activity for the past one month. On Tuesday, one pregnant woman accompanied by another woman who were part of the secret operation went to Surya Hospital. `16,000 was charged to perform the tests and sex of the fetus was informed. All this was recorded on video.

"Sudhakar owns Sridevi Hospital in Bogaram. He used to bring patients from there to Surya Hospital for the tests. We have arrested Narsing Rao, Sudhakar and nurse Dheervath Soniya for conducting the pre-natal sex determination tests. Cases under IPC Section 420 (Cheating) and Section 23 (Offences and Penalties) of PCPNDT Act are registered," said Syed Rafeeq, additional DCP, SOT Rachakonda.

Yadadri DMHO Dr Sambasiva Rao said that while Sudhakar brought the pregnant women to Surya Hospital, it was Narsing Rao who performed the test. "Narsing Rao registered as MD of Surya Hospital and offered medical services. We seized both the hospitals," the DMHO said.
