State-wide bandh: Schools declare holiday in Hyderabad

Anticipating disturbance in view of the state-wide band call given by the Left affiliated student associations, several private schools in the city have declared holiday on Thursday.

HYDERABAD:  Anticipating disturbance in view of the state-wide band call given by the Left affiliated student associations, several private schools in the city have declared holiday on Thursday. While some schools sent a circular along with the children, others sent smses later in the evening, which caught parents unawares. 

Little Flower School, Uppal, sent sms to parents at 6pm informing about closure of school. Several working parents complained that that with schools shut, they would have to make alternate arrangements or leave their children at alone at home. “ I have requested my boss to allow me to work from from home for tomorrow as I can’t leave my six-year-old daughter alone at home,” said Deblina Dey, a techie Moosapet. 

In view of the unscheduled bandh have postponed the examination scheduled for Thursday to Friday as part of the formative assessment that began earlier this week. The band call has been given as a protest against the government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the education sector. “ We are demanding for a fee regulation mechanism in private and corporate education institutions, more funds for development of infrastructure in government education institutions, appointment of permanent faculty in schools and colleges, and conversion of aided educational institutions to private ones. Welfare hostels are also being neglected by the government. These don’t have water, proper building and other facilities,” said R Gangadhar, secretary, All India Democratic Students Association (AIDSO).
