University of Hyderabad student jumps to death from 15th floor of apartment, reason unknown

The girl S Harshitha, a student of five-year integrated course in Systems Biology in the university, attended the classes in the morning. However, in the afternoon at around 12.24 pm, she reached Hima Sai Lake View Towers in Nallagandla under Chandanagar Police station limits and allegedly jumped from the 15th floor of the building.

As per the CCTV footage released by police, Harshitha was seen inquiring something from the watchman at the main gate. The watchman was seen giving her some directions. Police said that Harshitha had asked the guard directions to flat number 1401 in the Vanganga block of the apartment, but instead went to the terrace of Manasarovar block and jumped from there.

Security guards who noticed this, alerted the residents and police. Based on the identity proofs from her backpack, police informed her family members. Harshitha’s mother Anuradha had told police that she had failed one subject in the second semester exams, results of which were released recently. This has reportedly pushed her into depression due to which she could have taken this extreme step, she said.

However, it may be mentioned here that failure in just one subject does not result in failing the entire semester. Harshitha was promoted to the next semester and had, in fact, attended a class of the new semester on Friday. In first semester she had performed well and had scored 7.4 CGPA out of 10.

S Tirupathi Rao, inspector, Chandanagar police station, said that the girl died on the spot after jumping from the terrace. The police is investigating as to why she chose the particular residential apartment to jump to her death, Based on a complaint from her mother, a case under section 174 CrPC has been registered and the body was shifted for an autopsy at Gandhi hospital.
